Incline Village and Crystal Bay, Nevada: The Washoe and Paiute tribes were Lake Tahoe’s earliest residents, living off of fish from the lake’s clear waters. The region remained relatively quiet until the mid-19th century when the lumber industry took notice of the North Shore as a source of inventory. In 1884, Incline Village was declared an election precinct. Early logging activity was frenzied, but trailed off by the end of the 19th century as many of the accessible trees had already been cut down. Lumber interests sold much of the land to a real estate tycoon, who built a stone castle just south of Sand Harbor.

It wasn’t until the late 1950s when Crystal Bay Development Company purchased the land that residential development really began to take place. Crystal Bay Development envisioned a master planned community, complete with beaches, a ski area, golf course, schools, private homes and condominiums. The new community was named Incline Village, in remembrance of the region’s logging days and the steep hill up which the lumber was hauled. The year-round population grew rapidly in the 1960s and again in the late 1970s. Today, Incline Village offers both a unique lifestyle and tranquil vacation destination for thousands of residents and visitors.

Both residents and visitors enjoy the climate, the woodsy setting, and a variety of recreational and cultural activities. Incline Village sees about 300 days of sunshine each year, despite its four distinct seasons. Approximately 8 inches of rain and 216 inches of snow fall every year. Thanks to an abundance of foliage, autumn on the North Shore is vibrant and colorful. Springtime is mild, and the weather turns warm in the summer.

Skiers appreciate Incline Village’s location. The Diamond Peak Ski Resort is local and several major ski resorts are just a 30-minute drive away. In the summertime, residents may choose to relax on private beaches or try their golf swing at Robert Trent Jones golf courses. There is also a full-service recreation center, several parks, marinas, boat launching ramps and mountain bike rentals. Snowmobiling, hiking and jet skiing are also popular.

Truckee Meadows Community College and Sierra Nevada College offer a variety of cultural programs throughout the year, including music, dance, theater, craft shows and art exhibits. Many of these programs are tailored for adults, children or the whole family. The Tahoe Players puts on community theater performances in the summer, and the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor provides the opportunity to enjoy outdoor drama in July and August.
